Little trick: Use PCnet-PCI II instead of PCnet-PCI III (FastEthernet for that one .. forget about it) for the network adapter.

Instead of using ps x | grep firefox, try ps x | grep [f]firefox!

How to use that command. I’ll show with an example.
For example, you want to move all your files that finishes by ‘.JPG’ to ‘.jpg’.

Here’s the command line:
find / -name "*.JPG" -exec rename JPG jpg {} \;

And hop! Another way to make your life on Linux easier and faster!

You may be using NTP or the date command when you wanna to set the date of your computer, but know that both of these commands set the System Clock but not the Hardware Clock.

It is most likely that the Hardware Clock is not correct. You can set the Hardware Clock under Linux using the command: hwclock.
An easy way to do it is to set the System date with NTP, then use the command hwclock --systohc which will set the Hardware Clock from the System Clock.

Good to know ha!

Don’t worry, here’s I’ll give you a way of doing it!

First, find out where are your Guest machines configuration. By default, it should be in your HOME directory, in ~/.VirtualBox/Machines/.
Here you will find your different machines, and inside of each folder, you will find a XML file.

You could use two ways to do it, either you edit the XML file, or you use the VirtualBox manager (command-line).

For this tip, we will take the example of accessing the GuestOS web server (port 80), from the port 8888 of the Host OS.

Edit the XML file
Go inside the folder of the machine that you want to have network access to.
For example: cd ~/.VirtualBox/Machines/Gentoo/
Inside you will find the XML Gentoo.xml
Edit if with your favorite editor and inside the section <extradata>, add the following three lines:

Using VirtualBox Manager
You need here to use the VBoxManage command as followed:
$ VBoxManage setextradata Gentoo "VBoxInternal/Devices/pcnet/0/LUN#0/Config/apache/HostPort" 8888
$ VBoxManage setextradata Gentoo "VBoxInternal/Devices/pcnet/0/LUN#0/Config/apache/GuestPort" 80
$ VBoxManage setextradata Gentoo "VBoxInternal/Devices/pcnet/0/LUN#0/Config/apache/Protocol" TCP

This command allows you to manage the whole VirtualBox application settings via the command line, it’s up to you to find out the other options.

Play with it!

Virtualization, to say it simply, is the way to run different OSes on the same hardware. For example, you could have a Linux system running close to a Windows system, on the same machine. But what’s the aim?
It is used to reduce the costs in your life. Take the example that you have a Linux and a Windows. The first way, and the newbie will think, is to make partitions on his HardDisk and then make a dual boot. That’s fine, but what will happen if at any time, you’d like to run both systems at the same time?
That’s when virtualization takes place!

Virtualization will allow you to share CPU / Memory and I/O devices between two or more systems.

But virtualization doesn’t stop here. There’s 3 kind of virtualizations:
– Full-Virtualization
– Hardware-Assisted Virtualization
– OS Assisted Virtualization / Para-virtualization

I’ll explain now the difference between the three:

Full-Virtualization
This technique is used by VMware, MicroSoft and Parallels.
The performance results from this kind of virtualization are good and allows Guest OSes to be installed easily because no modification is required in the OS to be able to work just fine, because the Guest OS does have any knowledge of being virtualized.

Hardware-Assisted Virtualization
Used by VMware, MicroSoft,Parallels and Xen, that virtualization doesn’t need Guest OS modification either. The difference with Full-virtualization, is that these virtualization are “programming-speaking” easier, because the CPU will be virtualization-enabled thanks to VT-x and AMD-v technologies.
Not completely done, this technique should be the best one, with best performance later on.

OS Assisted Virtualization / Para-virtualization
VMware and Xen are using this technique. It allows better performance than full-virtualization in certain cases (it won’t be developed in this post), but unfortunately, not available for Windows, since here, the Guest OS has to be modified because the Guest OSes will communicate with the Host OS, which will be the monitor of the virtualized OSes.

Now Xorg is using HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer), but also, Xorg is not using mouse and keyboard for the input drivers, but evdev.

So how to enable HAL and evdev on Gentoo:
1. First of all, inside your /etc/make.conf, be sure that inside the variable INPUT_DEVICES, you have evdev.
2. If you added evdev to your make.conf, re-install x11-base/xorg-server.
3. Be sure that the package sys-app/hal is installed and that the daemon hal is running (/etc/init.d/hald status). If not, run it using: /etc/init.d/hald start.
4. You need to configure the daemon HAL if Xorg is still not working.
Create the file /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-x11-input.fdi with the following content:

NB: To test input on X, to avoid reboots of your computer everytime if input does not work, use two different TTY. On the first one, type: sleep 10; killall X and on the second one: X
That way, X will be killed after starting.

Long time i didn’t make any post here. Well, I did a lot of other things, like programming in Python, looking for a job … I’m really not good at it.

Anyway, today i come back with Torrentflux, an old old torrent client. But as Vuze has evolved now in that way, the client is also capable of search in different engines like isoHunt, PirateBay, TorrentBox and others…

The best thing about TorrentFlux is that it is web-based!!
And yes, why not turning your old PC into a permanent downloading machine.

If you have limited downloads at Home, like me, better to not use it … but well, i do use it

Here’s the ingredients you need to use it:
- A UNIX machine (*BSD / Linux …)
- LAMP (Linux Apache MySQL PHP)
- And of course, your old machine ^^

The installation is pretty easy, find the how-to inside the tarball.

Note: If the search feature does not work, be sure about permissions and that your php.ini has allow_url_fopen to On.

By the way, keeping a movie or games and keeping it for more than 24 hours, without having the original version is illegal … in some countries!

I agree that long ago, Linux was kinda hostile to certain person, with it’s black screen (kinda prettier than the blue screen anyway) on which you must login … The login moment … A great cliche!
